$1,000 a month is $5.77 an hour at 40 hours a week — $12,000 a year, or $461.54 every two weeks
The short answer: $1,000 a month is $5.77 an hour before tax, on the standard full-time year of 2,080 paid hours. Worked out: $1,000 × 12 = $12,000, and $12,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $5.77. The table below gives every common pay period.
| Pay period | Gross pay |
|---|---|

| Per day (8 hours) | $46.15 |
| Per week (40 hours) | $230.77 |
| Every two weeks (26 a year) | $461.54 |

Most people asking this are not describing a full-time job — $5.77 an hour for 40 hours would be under the federal minimum wage. They are describing a target for extra income on top of a job, and that changes the maths. Money earned freelancing, delivering or selling is self-employment income: once net earnings pass $400 in a year, the IRS charges self-employment tax of 15.3% on 92.35% of them, about $1,696 on $12,000 before any income tax. There is no employer withholding it for you, so the usual advice is to set aside a quarter to a third of every payment and send quarterly estimated payments (mid-April, mid-June, mid-September and mid-January). Counted honestly in hours, $1,000 a month is about 15 hours a week at $15, or 11.5 hours a week at $20.
Fixed pay spread over more hours is worth less per hour, which matters when you compare it with an hourly job.
| Hours a week | Hourly equivalent |
|---|---|
| 20 hours | $11.54 |
| 30 hours | $7.69 |
| 40 hours | $5.77 |
| 45 hours | $5.13 |
| 50 hours | $4.62 |
