Royalty Income: Books, Music, Photos and Courses

How royalties are paid, what shapes them, and how they are taxed

A royalty is a payment each time someone buys or uses work you own the rights to: a book, a song, a photograph, a course, a design. It can keep paying for years after the work is done, and for most creators each individual piece earns very little — income comes from a catalogue built over time.

How the main platforms pay

Self-published ebooks through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing earn a 35% or 70% royalty depending on price and territory, with the 70% option limited to a set price band. Stock photo, video and music libraries pay a share of each licence, often a small fixed amount per download. Course marketplaces pay a share of each sale that depends on how the buyer found the course. All of these terms are set by the platform and change, so read the current royalty page before you plan.

What shapes royalty income

Demand for the specific subject, whether buyers can find the work (titles, keywords and categories matter), the size of the catalogue, and whether you have your own audience — an email list lets you tell buyers about each new release instead of relying on the platform.

How royalties are taxed

If creating the work is your trade or business — for example you are a self-employed writer or photographer — royalties go on Schedule C with self-employment tax. Royalties from rights you hold as an investment, such as inherited copyrights or oil and gas interests, are usually reported on Schedule E. Platforms may issue a Form 1099-MISC or 1099-K.

What goes wrong

Stopping after one title; choosing crowded topics without a clear angle; ignoring the cover, title and description that decide whether anyone clicks; and signing away rights in a contract you did not read. Keep your own records of sales and payments.

Frequently asked questions

Are royalties passive income?

The payments need little ongoing work, but the IRS treats royalties from your own creative work as business income, subject to self-employment tax.

How much does one self-published book earn?

Most earn very little. Income depends on demand, visibility and how many books you have — there is no typical figure worth planning on.
