How Much Do CRNAs Make? Nurse Anesthetist Salary Calculator

BLS nurse anesthetist salaries in every state and at every level, what long weeks do to pay per hour, and take-home after 2026 tax

Nurse anesthetists earned a median salary of $236,590 in May 2025 — $113.75 an hour — according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which counted 51,840 CRNAs on payrolls. That is the highest median of any nursing job and well above nurse practitioners. The bottom tenth earned under $155,250 and the top tenth over $339,500; call pay and overtime are not included.

CRNAs: pay at every level

This is the BLS line for nurse anesthetists alone (SOC 29-1151), not the combined advanced-practice-nurse group, on employers' payrolls. Nurse midwives and nurse practitioners are separate lines, and anesthetists who bill independently as their own business aren't counted. Take-home assumes a single filer with 2026 federal tax and FICA and no state tax.

A nurse anesthetist's schedule

Most advanced practice nurses, CRNAs included, work full time. In hospitals and other facilities that run around the clock they may work shifts covering nights, weekends and holidays, and those in critical care may also need to be on call (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Before a procedure a nurse anesthetist reviews the patient's medications, allergies and illnesses, then gives general, regional or local anesthesia and watches vital signs throughout.

Overtime for CRNAs

CRNAs are registered nurses first, so the Department of Labor's nurse rule applies: an RN registered by the state board generally meets the duties test for the learned-professional exemption and, if paid a salary of at least $684 a week, may be classed as exempt; an RN paid by the hour should receive overtime (DOL Fact Sheet #17N). Most salaried CRNAs therefore get no time and a half, while hourly and per-diem anesthetists do. On-call pay isn't in BLS's figures either way.

A nurse anesthetist's salary per hour actually worked

Some CRNAs take call, and a salaried CRNA's pay stays the same however long the week runs. That lowers the value of each hour: the table divides the BLS median and 75th percentile nurse anesthetist salaries by weekly hours over 52 weeks, so you can compare a salaried offer with an hourly or locum rate.

Training, licenses and pay

Nurse anesthetists need at least a master's degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, a registered nursing license, a national certification exam and a state APRN license. Programs expect at least 1 year of experience as an RN in a critical care setting before admission, and some anesthetists go on to a Doctor of Nursing Practice (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).

Frequently asked questions

How much do CRNAs make a year?

$236,590 a year ($113.75 an hour) at the BLS median for May 2025. The middle half earned $206,730 to $294,350.

Which state pays CRNAs the most?

Alaska ($164.04 an hour, $341,210 a year), then New York and Massachusetts; Utah pays least among the 44 states where BLS released a figure (BLS, May 2025).

How long does it take to become a CRNA?

After becoming a registered nurse, you need at least a year of critical care RN experience to enter an accredited nurse anesthesia program, then a master's or doctoral degree, a national certification exam and a state APRN license (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). BLS doesn't publish a single year count because programs vary.

Do CRNAs get paid overtime?

Salaried CRNAs usually don't: registered nurses generally meet the learned-professional duties test and, paid at least $684 a week on a salary basis, may be exempt. CRNAs paid by the hour should receive overtime (DOL Fact Sheet #17N).
