How to Negotiate a Raise: Script, Timing, and Strategy

Get the raise you deserve. Step-by-step guide with exact scripts, timing, and what to do if they say no.

People who negotiate earn $1 million more over their career. Yet 57% never ask. Here's how — with word-for-word scripts.

When to Ask

Best: after a major project, during review season (start 2 months early), or when you've taken on new responsibilities.

Step 1: Research

Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, Payscale, LinkedIn Salary. Get 3–5 data points. Below median = strong case.

Step 2: Build Your Case

Top 3–5 accomplishments, quantified: 'Increased sales 15%,' 'Reduced churn 20%,' 'Led team of 5.'

Step 3: The Script

'I'd love to discuss compensation. I've [accomplishment 1], [accomplishment 2], [accomplishment 3]. Based on research, [$X] would be appropriate.' Then STOP TALKING.

Step 4: Objections

Budget tight → 'Revisit in 3 months? Open to bonus or PTO.' Not long enough → 'What milestones would justify it?' Let me think → 'When should I follow up?'

Step 5: If No

Ask what goals to hit in 3–6 months. Get it in writing. Deliver. If still no, interview elsewhere for leverage.

The Math

$5K raise at 30 with 3% annual increases = $200K+ lifetime earnings. One 15-minute conversation. Pair with the Monthly Income Booster app.
